I had a fantastic if somewhat overwhelming time in Auckland at the Writers Festival. This is one of the things that I did that was not part of the programme. The internet is amazing in the way that people with niche interests can find a place to converge. I never realised there were so many lock picking enthusiasts in Auckland!

Lock picking club. You could do a mash-up comic – Locking picking club meets Fight club. There is truly something for everyone. I once saw a documentary about people who make elaborate constructions out of twisty balloons. After the documentary played, the two film-makers taught us all to made a balloon dog. I was so proud of mine.

Yes, there were quite a few women! At least 20%. But none of them were handcuffed.
