The COVID-19 diaries: the supermarket
Hey! How have your supermarket experiences been? I found it incredibly frustrating that I tried so hard to keep the 2 metre rule and then someone would careen past me with less than a metre between us. I guess some of us are more worried about the pandemic than others. I normally also try to chat to the checkout operator but in her mask and gloves and with me standing 2 metres away, conversation wasn’t forthcoming.
I really should get my children off so much milk (they are eating vegetarian for the length of the confinement though!) but they are constantly pouring themselves mugs of the stuff and making bowls of cornflakes or muesli to eat over their iPads and laptops. The silly thing was, I couldn’t bring myself to buy too many bottles of the expensive organic brand and now either they will have to swap to soy (ew yuck, Mum!) or I will have to brave the New World once more…
Also, in regards to the leeks: last night I made a pie from a recipe my friend Kirsten sent me and it was delicious!

I am trying ordering online. I hope this will make my contact shorter with potential hazards. I guess if one truck goes out with the deliveries it will save me using my car. Latex gloves probably are a good idea

You might have a long wait. I was going to do that too, but in Wellington they only want people who can’t get their groceries in any other way to order on line. So I haven’t.
Thanks for the cartoons, Sarah! They perked me right up. I bought 9 litres yesterday but the 4 of us seem to go through it in just 3-4 days. I’m sure you do too, but I have one of those enormous, fast growing boys. I’m going to try powdered milk when this lot runs out. That should slow the consumption RIGHT down!!
These are a great record of this weird time – please keep them up Sarah! I hate how the individually plastic wrapped food seems appealing again.
Milk powder! We haven’t actually had to use it yet, but we have a couple of big packets. The kids might hate it but it makes me nostalgic for holidays with no fridge.
Hi Sarah! I went to the supermarket in Crofton Downs this evening and went through the whole range of emotions: joy at seeing a couple of acquaintances (‘I like humans!’ said one, ‘I’m among humans!!’), fury at people who were shopping in GROUPS making it harder to get past them, anxiety etc…but did manage to get home with it all. I also wore latex gloves but we have balked at wiping down all the packaging surfaces. Thanks for making these comics. See you next week xx
Definitely stressful and way more expensive. I hate that prices are going up, it feels like blackmarket war racketeering.

Again I totally identified with your comic. I too drive to the supermarket thinking about the protective capabilities of the latex gloves. I lined up at the supermarket on the first full day of the lock-down and it was a very eerie experience. You could tell everyone was dealing with their own levels of distress. One woman started crying and I coudn’t help but well-up inside out of empathy for her and everyone. And yep, there was no milk when I got to that part of the supermarket too. Fortunately today’s trip to the supermarket felt less weird and there was milk.
