I just joined the rest of NZ and upgraded my phone from a basic nokia to a smartphone. Here’s my first smartphone comic post, all about Anadarko doing deep sea oil exploration in NZ. As you can see, it upsets me, as many things do, but I don’t usually have time to draw a comic about it.

Completely love this! š
Brilliant
I feel I should point out that the word ‘Anadarko’ is a native american term for ‘milk of the honey bee’. Make of that what you will but I do think that giggling over how ominous the name sounds could come off as culturally insensitive. I doubt New Zealand would react kindly to someone from overseas poking fun over Maori terms. That being said my first thought was that Anadarko was another bad sequel to Donnie Darko.
Also Hector’s and Maui’s Dolphins don’t live in the sorts of depths oil wells are. If you want to help save them, (as everyone should,) make the Government put in place fishing exclusion zones because being caught in nets is what’s killing them.
Ok, thanks for that – here I am showing my ignorance and confirming my reluctance to do political cartoons because I will only get it wrong! Although it is a rather odd name for a oil company – milk of a honey bee? Really? A strange bee that is.
I know right? Honey bees don’t even have teats.
Anyway don’t let me put you off, a political cartoon doesn’t have to be “right”.
Also it seems culturally inappropriate that an oil company should use a Native American word that suggests a sensitivity towards nature – are they a Native American company? Do they have a right to use that name? Drilling for oil seems anti-nature to me.
Yes but……..
All marine life in the area can be effected by an oil spill, either directly or indirectly, regardless of the depth of an oil well. (Unless it’s on dry land) And there is speculation about the potential harm (strandings/injury) that sonic testing can have on marine mammals, who are very sensitive to sound, and use sonar to ‘see’ and navigate.
This is fantastic. I love it. Especially the last frame. I love it one one of your cartoons pops up in my email inbox. Thank you for them.
Pat Rosier Blog:http://patrosierblog.wordpress.com New post on Mondays.
This is fantastic – every time I hear the name of the rig I picture a woman as well – so pleased you have put a face to the name…
Oh no! Now there’s one less person in the old-school phone camp. But I enjoyed reading your smartphone comic.
True, fish. True. It will be f@*#ed.
Great strip.
Fracking beaut
Oh yeah, I like the cartoon!
