Being Gary Shteyngart

02/06/2011

Here’s the article I read. Gary Shteyngart has written three books. I read The Debutante’s Handbook, and loved it. I abandoned Absurdistan, and I have reserved Super Sad True Love Story at the library.

Good call firing the psycho therapist & I like how you’ve drawn her nose.

I really wish you would call yourself a proper writer – with two books published which both got rave reviews – otherwise I won’t be able to call myself a proper writer with my one small volume of poetry at the end of the year. You are setting the bar impossibly high, man! Think of the little people.

Loved the wistfulness & yearning in this one. xx H

Beautiful. I read Super Sad True Love Story earlier this year and became a bit obsessed with Gary. He’s very obsessable. But he seems somehow unreal and unknowable as a person – whereas, from your work, you are the opposite!

This one took me from wistful recognition to wry laughter and back again. Thank you Sarah.
