This idea – of memories in objects – is explored beautifully in Anna Smaill’s book The Chimes. You should read it if you haven’t already. It’s so original and a page-turner to boot.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that it’s Winter Zine Fest at Thistle Hall, Cuba Street, Wellington, this Saturday 4 June between 12 and 5. I’m going to be there, selling the first chapter of Mansfield and Me: a graphic memoir if you want to have a sneak preview. Maybe I will also staple up some of my Let Me Be Frank comics – it depends on my finances! Anyway, come and say hi if you’re in town – I’d love to meet you.

These memories were very cool, and I love the illustrations. Did these come from the book you were referring too, or did you sketch these? Either way I really enjoyed this post. 🙂

Love the simple illustrations, they catch the eye and the writing looks like a real journal entry. Smells do it for me and songs. I once went to a hotel and used their body wash and memories of a man I once knew flooded back,he used had the same body wash. It was startling but good. Really like your blog.

Aren’t memories wonderful, they are like road signs on the highway of your life. They enable you to pinpoint events, remember people and provide referent points to navigate one’s mind.

Great post! Made me think of a book I had to read for a course at university called “The Comfort of Things” by Daniel Miller. The book discusses how our identity is formed and expressed by the objects we own, well worth a read!

I like this a lot. Thanks for sharing this idea – I think of memories held in fragrance and music, but hadn’t really thought about objects. 🙂

This is so beautiful. I’ve also had random memories of people embedded in daily objects (and sometimes the associations are random). I love that you illustrated this.

I love the post, and the original illustration is well done. Very inspiring. I have not read the book you speak of but I think I may intend to do so. Does it at all explore the idea that Other People can read those memories from some of those objects?

Moving…& Soooo familiar…Whenever I hang laundry I also think of M…and when I make tea, I mean liberale Evert time, I relive that very undistinctive moment with T.
