Bad Camper
Are you feeling bombarded by domestic comics yet? I’ll stop tomorrow, I promise, and go back to my usual slack ways. This is just my keep-sane-in-the-summer-holidays strategy. Although it’s probably driving me a bit batty – I blog in order make myself do something and also to start conversations with people, but that gets me in a hideous technology loop of checking social media to see if someone’s responded. I should probably just keep these comics in my journal – that’s how we used to do it in the old days! Why do I insist on sharing?
Talking about the weirdness of social media, I just read this article about going viral and this article about making yourself write. I like the idea of writing. I haven’t written prose since I finished my novel and I miss it. I think I might have to install Mac Freedom and start getting up at 6am to scratch that itch – the question is can I do that without my kids waking up too and demanding attention? Can I push through my nagging fear that nobody cares if I write another word or not? I think I have post-3rd-novel syndrome.
You must write another novel! I expect I shall only one of the many eager readers who will swoop down upon it like seagulls after chips.
I also have greatly been enjoying the domestic-themed comics and the chuckles they have brought during the school holidays. Holidays seem very long once you have a school-aged kid!
Thanks, Debbie x
I only enjoy camping if someone else has planned & packed for it and then does the cooking (and by someone else, I mean Lucas). As for 6am writing – maybe I should join you in that, despite the fact I’m quite sure no-one needs – let alone wants – to read another word from me. This comment included.
I want to read another one from you! I loved Zen Under Fire! Ok, let’s do it. 6am writing.
Sarah I love all your work but I ADORE your domestic comics. I can’t get enough of them.
Thanks, Linda x I shall keep going with you in mind!
I’m with Linda (hi Linda!) re your domestic comics. Keep ’em coming! I used to get up at 6am to write or work or blog or just stare out the window, uninterrupted, drinking a hot cup of tea, but the small person in my house has decided SHE likes getting up then too. Argh. Perhaps I should put her in a tent in the garden…
I enjoyed your cartoon. Keep writing it is keeping us entertained.
And hi Lucy! The other thing is – I couldn’t agree more about camping. We’re meant to love it – and I do, as an idea – but my true holiday is a city. Cafes, people – I just want to sit and look. Somehow though, as NZers we’re meant to to live on the wild side. Leaky tents, hard ground – what are we thinking of?? My theory is that NZ got the Scots and the Dutch and Australia got the Greeks and the Italians. No contest…
Don’t stop!
I adore the domestic comics. I’m especially in love with Violet’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ style tears in this one. I’ve spent the week reluctantly coming to the conclusion that I need to get back on the 6am writing bandwagon too if I’m to squeeze more than fifteen minutes writing into my day. But, yes, how to do it without alerting the kids to the fact that I’m up & it must be morning…hmm. Will require stealth-training! Lovely to know that there are others out there similarly desperate for some time alone.
Sarah
I care. Do not stop writing or drawing, or you will have to answer to me, too!
I like your domestic comics very much. I love being able to “see” the interaction between you and your children. It brings back sweet memories of when my son was small.
“Can I push through my nagging fear that nobody cares if I write another word or not?”
I was published exactly once. I wrote a letter-to-the-editor of my hometown small paper. And I ghost wrote it as well, posing as my boss (he owned the print shop I worked in and wanted to express his opinion for on a local community issue, but he was struggling with the prose)
I have the same nagging fears you mention.
So….I just write like dancing with no one watching.
Great post.
