Sewing

16/06/2013

16june00116june00216june00316june004Last week a journalist came round to interview me about my forthcoming novel and he was very relieved to hear that I wasn’t sewing anymore. He seemed to think, based on my old neglected Poppyshock blog, that I was sickeningly productive. I tried to explain that it was all smoke and mirrors, and that I didn’t do very much, but what I did do I photographed in its best light. I also tried to explain how, when I had small children, I had to make things because I couldn’t stand for days to slip past with nothing to show for themselves apart from a few new stains on my once-fancy clothes. I told him about my mother, who is always making things and improving things. I told him that now I don’t do anything apart from write and draw comics. I don’t really miss the making of things – maybe I will, when I get more time. Maybe I’ll even take up sewing again, once I get that room of my own.

I sewed my own clothes for a while when I was younger, because it was cheaper than buying them at the store. I was pretty good at sewing, but it seemed to me that no matter how well I did, there was something about the clothes that made them look, well, hand-made. I thought at the time it was the patterns.

I was happy to give up sewing.

I sort of sew. The machine is always on the floor next to the dining table. I like the nyinyinyinyinyi of the thing. But it runs away with me and gobbles up whatever I offer it and I get too giddy to care. I hand made my bedroom curtains and it was faster than the machine and I got moderately less crap end results.

I like the idea of you buying the lost outfits of your youth. I think second hand clothes are a lovely haunting of sorts.

This is a nice comic! Many people can relate I think, I only sew small and useless things, such as mini-wallets and a plush donkey once.

What your comic doesn’t reveal is that I was really pissed off to get the sewing prize as I wanted the art prize – I was devastated the next year when they put me in extension sewing rather than extension art – apparently the sewing teacher had horse traded for me and was really put out when I got my mother to ‘fix it’ and get me in the art class.
