Horse before cart

Yesterday I was working on some quick cover concepts for my book so my publisher had something for the Frankfurt Buchmesse catalog. It’s weird being a designer and a writer – it means you can make the cover before the book is actually finished:
But now, since it does have a cover, it’s feeling more like a real book. Part novel, part graphic novel, I’ve done a lot of illustrations and written a lot of words. It’s coming together. Maybe.

I like the first rendering, with the blue. There’s something so inviting about the division of space, the blue slant of light from the blue in the window pane, the way the words fit in the space. I look forward to reading the book.
brodsky and utkin Baby – middle one!
When I was in the first year of my (part time) thesis project I did up a mock advertising poster for the book I’d like it to turn into. I found it quite encouraging to dream about the final ‘product’ and it was fun to think of it as an object out there in the world rather than a long and difficult text I am grappling with inside my mind which seems to have no concrete or physical presence. Yay for you!
Beautiful!
