According to Wikipedia I have this completely wrong – Elizabeth von Arnim was born in Australia, and moved to England at the age of three. But that’s not the impression Katie Roiphe gave me – Roiphe said she was born in New Zealand, and her parents brought her to Europe to marry her off at the age of 23. It must be so confusing being a biographer.
